JOURNAL FOUR

The structure of this story was very unique and interesting in the way that it rotated between three main states. The first of these states was the present, when the main character is meeting and inevitably living with the daughter that she gave up for adoption. The next is the past, where the character was interacting with the older man who got her pregnant. The third and final state is where she strips down to go swimming in a river and wants to shoot a snake to watch it struggle and lash out and eventually die. I can only assume that the last form is metaphorical and not an actual event. Though, I could be completely wrong. This shifting between seemingly different worlds helped to both tie together past and present events as well as clue the reader into the mindset of the main character through her interaction with the snake. The combination of these seemingly separate scenarios help the audience to connect what happened in the past to what is currently happening in the present and how the main character feels about everything that has happened and everything that is going on.
