In the beginning of the Preface for The New Civil Rights, Yoshino states that “to cover is to tone down a disfavored identity to fit into mainstream.” Personally, I strongly agree with Kenji Yoshino’s definition of covering. It is certainly a dilution of a certain trait, habit, hobby, or action, or a sort of a half or partial truth about ones self. What covering is not, however, is completely changing every aspect of yourself. The way that I look at it is if you cover something partially, it is still visible and you can still tell what it is, but if you completely throw the blanket over it, you have no idea what is under it. Through this idea, people who cover aren’t not being themselves, they are just choosing not to show that part of them.
