Manoff’s writing “Is Hawaii’s Racial Harmony a Myth?” definitely does not offer a coherent whole. It constantly loops back onto itself while also contradicting original statements he made earlier on in the essay. It almost feels as though he is just constantly streaming his thoughts and letting them bounce around freely and connect back to each other as he seemingly continues to just ramble along lost in his own mind. Among these thoughts are ideas of two types of people – those who are seduced by the idealistic racial harmony and those who are able to acknowledge Hawaii’s uniqueness without being absorbed by that trap. He says that “ultimately, I [Manoff] tried to walk the same fine line that those people seem to want to walk, exploring what makes Hawaii unique without being seduced by myths of perfect interracial harmony” (Manoff). This shows how he is constantly toggling between the two side of this sort of spectrum of the views about racial fluidity in Hawaii.
